Obama Divorce Rumors Dismissed by White House as Untrue

Over the past few weeks, rumors have been surfacing about tumultuous times during the early years of the Obama marriage. According to an unauthorized Obama biography titled The Amateur by Edward Klein, President Obama’s marriage nearly ended in divorce back in 2000.

The book claims that Michelle Obama had divorce papers drawn up after tensions in their relationship skyrocketed following Obama’s crushing defeat in a Democratic primary race against Congressman Bobby Rush. Mr. Klein asserts that Ms. Obama was upset with her husband after he refused to follow her advice regarding taking on Rush. The book also claims that this defeat in the Democratic primary race left Obama saddled with debt and near suicidal.

White House spokespeople have dismissed the biography as a work of fiction, saying “Ed Klein has a proven history of reckless fabrication in order to sell books. Nobody in their right mind would believe the nonsense in this one.”

Regardless of the validity of these rumors, it should not tarnish the reputation of the president. On the contrary, it should serve to demonstrate the resilience that President Obama and the First Lady have shown in their personal lives. Over the course of a 20 year marriage, there are bound to be bumps in the road. The true test of the strength of a marriage is how the couple responds to these issues. In the case of President and Ms. Obama, it appears that any rough times they experienced have only served to make their relationship stronger. For that, they should be admired and respected.
