British Woman Files for Divorce, Cites “Fifty Shades of Grey” as Part of Her Reason
A 41-year-old British banker recently filed for divorce
from her husband, claiming his “boring attitude” toward sex constitutes “unreasonable
behavior,” one of the five grounds for divorce in England. Apparently, the last
straw for this woman was her husband’s refusal to recreate some of the erotic
sex scenes in the popular book “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
The woman claimed their sex life had hit a rut. Her husband
never complimented her on how she looked, and he never remembered romantic
occasions like Valentine’s Day. In order to spice up their love life, she
bought sexy underwear and asked her husband to role play bondage scenes and
other kinky sex acts from the best-selling novel. When he refused, she filed
for divorce.
It appears the woman’s husband is admitting to engaging in “unreasonable
behavior” in order to expedite the divorce process.
Fortunately, it is unlikely that such a scenario would ever occur
among a couple divorcing in the United States. The vast majority of states now
grant “no-fault” divorces which eliminate the need for one party to prove the
other side was responsible for the failed marriage. While a refusal to reenact
scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey” may be the last straw in an American
marriage, it is likely the couple would just file for a “no-fault” divorce in
order to avoid the public embarrassment associated with this type of breakdown
in their marital sex life.
However, it may also be reasonable to argue that if you are
citing a refusal to reenact scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey” as the reason
behind your divorce, then there are most likely many more fundamental problems
with the relationship. “Irreconcilable differences” seems like a much better
reason for divorce in these situations.
