Barry Sanders Files for Divorce

Former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders recently filed for divorce from his wife, Lauren. They had been married for 11 years. The divorce petition listed “breakdown in marital relations” as the reason for divorce.

The couple got married in 2000, less than a year after his surprise retirement from the NFL. Prior to their marriage, Lauren had been a news anchor at Detroit’s NBC affiliate.

Sanders is seeking joint child custody of their three sons, who are 10, 8, and 4 years old. Barry also has another son from a previous relationship.

Sanders played his entire 10 year career with the Detroit Lions. At the time he retired, he was the second all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton. He most likely would have surpassed Payton had he played one more season. Sanders was elected into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2004.
